American Child, 8 yrs Old, mixed media, Lauralynn White

“I was moved to create this work in response to the current news reports of the many abuses American Children are subjected to in 2023. I chose to utilize identical photocopies made from a photo I took of my daughter as a child and then - using pencil, the crayon set I had at 8 years old, and some other mixed media - I superimposed the various states of trauma faced by the American Child in 2023 at 8 years old. These are all real current issues taken from the headlines. The situation of each child in the work was deeply researched so that I could present the image and accompanying words in the most impactful and clear way possible. I have chosen to arrange the images in this piece as a grid so that each mini portrait can be compared and contrasted to the others.” ~Lauralynn White

After some consideration, we feel the need to put a sign near your piece to alert viewers to potential emotional triggers. I want to be sensitive toward those who may have experienced any of the traumas that are described in the text surrounding the images. The work is in the turret of Fowler-Kellogg, so we will place a sign just outside of the entrance that says:

"This section of the exhibition contains artwork with sensitive content"

I hope you'll understand.

Thank you,

‘American Child, 8 yrs. old, 2023”, Lauralynn White, photocopy of my child, crayons from when I was 8, mixed media, 28x36"ins.

Protest looks different to everyone. For some it’s marching down the street with fists raised, and for others it’s a quiet refusal to patronize certain companies or products. We are seeking artwork of all mediums, including video, poetry and taped performances that address the theme of the Art of Protest.

FACE

Lauralynn White, “Floral Self I”, Embroidery 9”x9”

F A C E can be defined in any aspect. On first thought of F A C E is of a person’s face meaning their appearance, profile, expression or features. But, not just a human; there’s the FACE of a mountain, the FACE of a car, the FACE of a building. The F A C E is the first thing we see upon entry, the front, a portal to the mind. In sewing, it’s the right side of fabric. It’s the most significant or prominent surface of an object. Refer to any derivative of the word F A C E : facade, facial, surface, face-value, about-face, deface etc. There is F A C E slang: puss, mug, mush, clock, pan (dead pan). Then there’s the verb F A C E : to meet or confront, to acknowledge and accept or deal with, to encounter, to bring or to be brought face-to-face with (face the music), to accept the un- pleasant consequences. Let’s F A C E it!
