Figures emerge from the grain of the wood in these subtle works created with oil paint and stain on wood panels.
The Rakuins I create come from a specific place in my imagination where a peaceful people live by the sea.
The raku process by which low-fire clay glazes are oxidized in uneven fiery conditions and then plunged into cold water to stop the reaction makes each one individual and somewhat unpredictable.
Figurescapes are a fusion of landscape and the human form. Through them I strive toward oneness with the terrestrial divine. They imbue the canvas with a collective sense of earthly elegance and mystical grandeur.
These paintings express human emotion through organic forms, saturation of color and natural light. They impose humanity on the natural world. Integrating human forms in landscape illuminates dark places and celebrates the sacred. My belief in the necessity of living in harmony with nature is expressed through this sublime and powerful fusion.

“The light seems to emanate from everywhere on a timeless, light-filtered, cloudy day. Bare trees repeatedly populate her images and sometimes act as a linear foil to her figures…. Following her academic training and assimilating two genres, she uses art as a means of self-discovery and exploration.” – Ron Schira, Reading Eagle Corrospondent
Whenever I travel, I paint. Plein air painting allows me to absorb the color, light and feeling of "place". These studies inform my studio work.
Sometimes the light and color of a place just consumes me. Such was the case in Texas, first in El Paso and then years later in Marfa.
I have spend part of each year in Chautauqua. I draw both visual and intellectual stimulation from this place. It is my center.
I live and work in Reading, Pennsylvania. Naturally, much of the landscape surrounding me is reflected in my work.
As an artist of German heritage from the Reading, Pennsylvania area, I wanted to celebrate the commonalities of our landscape forms with that of our sister city Reutlingen, Germany for the exhibit From Reading to Reutlingen & BACK!
“New Nudes” the work of two painters, each dedicated to the process of depicting the naked human form. The exhibition, titled "New Nudes," showcases the acrylics of Paul Rybarczyk and the oils of Lauralynn White. Both artists are avowed figuralists but approach subjects differently, or reflexively rather, as each only represents his or her own gender, respectively, for this show.
"For this display of new work, [White] extends her process to encompass new materials and a different approach to conjoin the human form within its environment.
Using about a dozen 8-foot hollow doors from a lumber yard, she sands and transparently treats the [wood] surfaces to enhance their natural grain, which she then uses to pull figures and meaning from the fluid skeins of pressured wood. Subtly, she adapts the curved lines into facial profiles, hips and breasts, dancing or floating amid the patterns." ~ Ron Schira, Reading Eagle
I revel in the pursuit of capturing figures in motion. It’s a challenge. There is a high rate of failure; however, it is incredibly rewarding when the lines convey the movement, the moment, the expression of another’s artistic performance. I feel if I can capture a bit of the energy, and spirit of the artist on paper, I have succeeded!
I love the quality of line; its weight, speed, direction, simple or complex, even implied. To that end, I incessantly draw people from life in real time. It is my custom that each drawing lasts only as long as the music plays, when the song is over, so is the drawing.
"Distances is an exploration of the space and time between one place and another. Distances can take many forms: the physical measurement, the journey to self, a separation from understanding, emotional estrangement or simply the road leading us forward. The works in this exhibit are an exploration of my fascination with these varying concepts of distances."

White, painting
Lauralynn White is an artist pursuing her own vision. She expresses her core belief in the necessity of living in harmony with nature through her sublime yet powerful fusions of the human body with the earth. She believes there is an inherent oneness in all things and pursues that as a reality in her work. By fusing the human body with the landscape, she celebrates the sacred nature of both.

Capturing the human figure in motion has become a lifelong passion. Dancers provide an endless challenge to capture their grace and movement in line and paint.
I believe there exists an inherent oneness in all things and that it is necessary to live in harmony with the natural world. This informs my vision and I pursue it as reality resulting in the fusion of the human body with the environment in my oil paintings. I imbue the figures with emotion by the attitude of their pose and the use of a palette that gives greater power to the work.

Connections I-VIII”, 12”x12”, ink executed on MDF in Chicago, IL during stay-at-Home order 2020.
These are the first eight in an ongoing series called Connections. They are a visual representation of the way we are all stuck in place, deeply rooted, yet still reaching out to connect to one another...
Life begins with the body and ends with it. I work primarily with the nude figure. It is the standard, a repository for everything that humanity has experienced and is inextricably connected to the environment in which we live. It is our common link to the natural world. I began with the female figure because it is my personal point of reference, yet the male form has found its way into my works as an integral part of the natural equation. I spend a lot of time working through base emotions to attain a higher plane of consciousness. I illuminate that primal relationship by fusing the human form to the land and exposing the sacred in all things. ~Lauralynn White 2020
